A portrait session is a great way to get a new family portrait, maternity photos, share the exciting news about your engagement, or even just to update your Linkedin profile photo for a business headshot.
If you're looking to get a portrait session or new photos soon, please plan ahead with your professional photographer and check out these tips to have the best session possible.
Here are our Top 3 Tips to Get the Most out of your Portrait Session:
1) Where should I have my portrait session?
It comes down to what kind of look you're going for. If you're going for a "beachy look", green park, etc. - these types of things will help you narrow down on the location of your portrait session.
Here are some popular locations for a portrait session:
Family Portrait Photography Locations
If you're doing a family portrait session and have young kids, a local park with a playground like Cuesta Park in Mountain View, CA might be nice. This gives the kids some place just to get comfortable in front of the camera and be in a familiar setting.
Plus, we can get some candid photos of everyone just laughing and playing.

Watch out for Photography Permits!
For local parks, just make sure to double check if there is a photography permit required, as this will be an extra fee - usually from $20-$100. We've listed this for most popular parks but this is something to keep in mind if you have a specific location you want your photos at.
2) What time should I book my portrait session for?
Indoor Portraits Can Pretty Much be All Day
If your portrait is indoors, timing is more flexible and can be almost anytime throughout the day.
Do you want a studio portrait? The studio has a different look, but can also be really nice for family portrait. Usually there will be additional lighting and a backdrop provided in a photo studio for the portrait session.
Outdoor Portraits - Avoid High Noon and when the Sun is Too Harsh...You'll Probably Look Uncomfortable Trying to Keep Your Eyes Open Too
If it's an outdoor shoot, we recommend either in the morning (before Noon) or late afternoon to get closer to golden hour and to avoid harsh sun in mid-afternoon (e.g. ideally from 4pm until an hour before sunset in the summer). In the summer, 5pm would be best. Keep in mind that golden hour will change as the sunsets earlier in the Fall/Winter.
Sometimes too much light works against the photos and can make it more uncomfortable for you during the session (so high noon is not recommended)! :)

3) What do I wear to my portrait session?
Best Clothes to Wear to your Portrait Session (Hint: Keep it Simple, Coordinate, and Plan Ahead)
When you have multiple people that will be in the family photos, coordinating what you'll be wearing is a great idea! (This way, nobody clashes)
For example, you want to stay away from really busy patterns because this can be distracting in the photos. If one family member is going to wear patterns, avoid having the whole family or team in patterns.
